Memorial Tree Planting for Jake Michel 6/6/13

TreePlantingWeb_03Up on the hill overlooking the OM Sanctuary entrance, American chestnut
seedlings were planted in memorial of Jake Michel, the former owner of the property through a donation by Jonathan and Susan Nillson to Buncombe County Treasured Trees and Asheville Greenworks Program.  Susan Roderick from Green works spoke with Shelli Stanback, OM Sanctuary founder and told her about the donation. They both agreed the best location for the planting would be on the former Richmond Hill Inn property. These American Chestnut seedlings are a part of a unique breeding program by
The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF), to restore the American chestnut
to our eastern woodlands. Bryan Burhan, president of TACF spoke about the
amazing attributes of the tree and what it historically has meant to our
country. Shelli Stanback spoke about Jake Michel in the same vein and
how his dedication to creating the Richmond Hill Inn with his wife Marge
created a place that had touched the lives of many. While the planting
took place, a local student, Sarah Tucker sang a song written by Dolly Parton for the chestnut tree.
It was a touching moment for all.
